Pastoral Support

At Pye Green Academy, our whole staff team strive to create a supportive, caring and happy environment where effective learning can take place. Pastoral care is central to our ethos and we have a supportive pastoral system, which sees pupil well-being as a priority.

Close relationships between teachers and pupils on a day-to-day basis are vital and fully recognised. The Head Teacher has overall responsibility for all members of the Academy, but the Pastoral Team, Class Teachers and Teaching Assistants are primarily responsible for the pastoral care of each pupil. The Senior Leadership Team take an interest in all the pupils and are quickly informed of any individual concerns.

We offer outstanding pastoral care and this is evident through the progress that our children and families make as a whole.  By ensuring early help is at the forefront of our ethos when addressing concerns, we ensure the right help is provided at the right time for our children and families.  This prevents issues from escalating and becoming a greater problem in the future.

We have a strong working relationship with a range of agencies, including Children’s Services, ELSA, Fireworks, West Midlands Police and Family Action.  We are also able to signpost to other organisations when necessary, to ensure the greatest results are achieved for a family in need of support.

Playtimes are well supervised by teachers and teaching assistants and pupils are encouraged to support each other and take responsibility by applying to become Play Leaders. Our zoned KS2 playground and reading, writing and exploration areas on both playgrounds allow many opportunities for children to take part in engaging activities.

Lunchtime Supervisors are employed to supervise the pupils at lunchtime. They receive ongoing training throughout the year.

Partnership with Parents

We put a lot of emphasis on parents’ involvement in their child’s education. A positive partnership between the Academy and parents, with active parental involvement, helps pupils’ personal, academic and emotional development during their vital years at the Academy.

Parents are as important as teachers in:

· Monitoring learning – regularly discussing learning, homework and attainment with their child

· Fostering values and good character – supporting their child’s personal development and encouraging them to develop a positive character

· Supporting organisation – helping their child to be organised for success, by having all the right equipment and uniform and by being in the right place at the right time

· Motivating and raising aspirations – motivating their child and encouraging them to fulfil their potential

We believe that our partnership approach to working with parents plays a big part in our success.

Our commitment to pastoral care and to ensuring that every pupil gets personal attention means that parents can be assured that their child will flourish in our safe and secure learning environment.

Mental Health

At Pye Green Primary Academy, we are committed to supporting the emotional health and wellbeing of our pupils, parents and staff. We know that everyone experiences life challenges that can make us vulnerable and at times, anyone may need additional emotional support. We take the view that positive mental health is everybody’s business and that we all have a role to play.

At our school we:

· help children to understand their emotions and feelings better

· use ‘Zones of Regulation’ to allow children to discuss feelings and emotions

· help children feel comfortable sharing any worries or concerns

· help children socially to form and maintain relationships

· promote self-esteem and ensure children know that they count

· encourage children to be confident and ‘dare to be different’

· help children to develop emotional resilience and to manage setbacks

· support all pupils to become ‘Mental Health Champions’ through our One Goal Programme

· have a trained ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) who works with identified pupils

· staff trained in emotion coaching and Team Teach

We offer different levels of support:

Universal Support – To meet the needs of all our pupils through our overall ethos and our wider curriculum. E.g. developing resilience for all.

Additional support – For those who may have short term needs and those who may have been made vulnerable by life experiences such as bereavement.

Targeted support – For pupils who need more differentiated support and resources or specific targeted interventions such as wellbeing groups or personal mentors.

We work alongside many agencies to help support our pupils. These include:
